Celebrate the differences
The Enchantment Society is an interdisciplinary organization dedicated to responding to the disenchantment of the world. We approach enchantment from the intersection of the Humanities and Social Sciences, inspiring thinkers to engage with life with wonder and curiosity, bringing meaning back to the world.
Since the concept of disenchantment was introduced by Max Weber, various thinkers, including John Cottingham, have explored different aspects of it, such as โde-magicking,โ โflattening,โ or โbleaching out.โ There has been much internal dialogue about the role of religion and religious belief when discussing enchantment. Our approach is simply to acknowledge that inherent meaning has been stripped from the world. To illustrate this, consider C.S. Lewis’s work The Abolition of Man, which critiques the authors of the Green Book, who, in their attempt to demystify the world, inadvertently reduce life to a mere set of objective facts, devoid of any emotional, moral, or spiritual significance. We hope to counter this issue by reintroducing enchantment through interdisciplinary endeavors and education.
Currently, we host The Classical Connection, a journal that publishes student research and participates in the Great Conversation of Western Civilization by exploring the intersection of various disciplines to bridge the gap between modern and classical thought. Our commitment to reenchantment guides our future aspirations, including various outreach initiatives such as public events, community outreach programs, public talks, online courses, and media appearances, all aimed at cultivating a sense of wonder and curiosity of life.
The Enchantment Society invites you to join us in our mission to bring meaning back to the world and inspire others to approach life with renewed awe and reverence. Together, we can rediscover the magic hidden within our shared experiences and foster a reenchanted world.
The website overall is dedicated to The Enchantment Society, but the Journals page should just have a link to a The Classical Connection page. The reason for this, as opposed to just having The Classical Connection on this page is that I plan to launch another journal later.
